Second generation migrant families often receive tremendous support from their parents, relatives and community. With this support , however, can come expectations about how couples should relate to each other, parent children and commit to their family of origin.
Last year Relationships Australia’s commitment to such challenges was shown in its involvement in a publication titled, “The Family: Living Between Two Worlds”. The publication was a resource to be used in connection with an SBS television series, “The Family”, featuring a Melbourne couple born of Italian parents and having to juggle loyalties both to the “old ways” and to their own three sons.
This seminar explores hot topics while encouraging parents to choose how they can maintain their culture while bringing up children in 21st century Australia. The course aims to:
• identify the benefits of living between two (or more) cultures.
• support participants to identify issues that are causing conflict within their family.
• explore what is strong and build on it.
• develop strategies to address conflict within the family.
• strengthen intergenerational relationships.
• improve communication within the family.
• explore ways that families can maintain their culture.
