Parenting between Cultures
Migrant and refugee families often receive tremendous support from their parents, relatives and community. With this support can come expectations about how couples should relate to each other, parent their children and commit to their family of origin.
Negotiating between cultures and making change may cause conflict. This seminar explores some of the hot topics while exploring how workers can encourage migrant and refugee parents to choose how they want to maintain their culture while raising children in a complex, modern Australia.
Topics covered in this workshop include:
• identifying issues that are causing intergenerational conflict within families
• exploring how to identify and build on family strengths
• developing strategies to address conflict within families
• developing strategies to strengthen intergenerational relationships
• improving communication within the family
• exploring ways that families can maintain their culture
• referral options
